What I’m Working On: Coffered Ceiling
I am currently working on a basement design for a new client. Although the basement has high ceilings (which is rare), there are many exposed beams holding up the rest of the house. To disguise all these awkward shapes and protrusions, I suggested creating a coffered ceiling. This is a great way to hide all the structural elements without drawing unwanted attention and introduces an interesting architectural detail. I’m a stickler for balance and symmetry. Here are some photos that I have pulled for inspiration.
Since it is a basement and doesn’t get a ton of light, I plan to keep the ceiling and the trim work simple. No elaborate moldings, large open coffers (about 6′ square) and fresh white paint. Although, I am seriously digging that bead board.
